Backstops and Targets
Practical backstops or target mounting methods are a key factor in making shooting at home, whether indoors or out, practical. This topic comes up from time to time, as members try different approaches. The pages linked here will take you several different approaches. Hopefully, from them you will get an idea that may help you.
Dick
A Re-Fillable Mobile Indoor Backstop - A 4' X 4' box with a carpet front that has served as a good indoor backstop for several years.
Making a Target Bag - Burlap bag targets are one of the commonest and easiest targets to use, also very cheap. However, I felt limited in the animals faces available, so I made some bags of my own and painted on animals I couldn't get.
A Target Tub - Don Jochem in The Netherlands sent this fine set of picture instructions on how he made a really good looking and easy target that should be inexpensive and last a long time. It's similar to a bag target in that it's filled with sheet plastic to stop the arrows, but Don's form is much sturdier and longer lasting... better looking, too.
A Nice Printable Small Target for Indoor Practice - You can print these out and shoot them up at 10 to 12 yards.
Dick's Backyard Range - A few years ago I went to considerable effort to set up a really nice, and really safe, range in the back yard. I think it offers some good ideas on multiple targets in a small space on on really secure backstops.
Backyard Range Renewed and Updated - After three seasons of almost daily use, the range got into really bad shape. Burlap targets left outdoors in the Northwest rain rotted out and/or were shot out. Also, I had to drop down to pretty light weight bows, and started to find arrows bouncing off of targets instead of going in. I decided to devote a week to improvments and updating...
Captain Dick's Burlap Ball Target - I wanted to get in some ground shooting practice and came up with this. I thought showing what and how I had done it might be of interest to others.
Making a Target/Backstop from Foam Insulating Sheets and Expanding Foam - This was a project that just kind of grew as I went along, but I ended up with a couple of nice foam block animal targets to add to my range. Once again, it's presented not so much for you to follow exactly as to provide ideas to work from.
