Wayne Isaaks New Black Bear Carbon Wesley

Wayne Isaaks recently contacted Craig Ekins and had him build the first Wesley with a carbon backing. The bow is a Wesley, with matte black glass on the front and carbon on the back, ebony riser. Here is what he has to say about it, and some pictures.

>>>I was looking into going to a longbow, for a quieter bow. An article by the
Lightning Longbows guy convinced me they were quieter. I bought an
inexpensive bamboo-backed osage bow (laminated wood bow 72" 55#@28") and
liked it, but wanted more cast. Then, I was looking at Korean hornbow
reproductions and thumb ring. Oddly, I had not run across Howard Hill
Archery on the WWW, but found a lot of stuff about Howard. I got Shultz's
"Hitting 'Em Like Howard Hill", and decided I could go a long way with
Howard Hill's style. Then I stumbled onto HHA's site, and got my Wesley
Special.
So, I really got into longbow to learn to hit 'em like Howard hill, and
naturally followed the straight-end longbow recommendation, not realizing
that all the modern R/D flat bows are "better".
Like Howard, and Shultz, I found the HH straight-end longbow much more
handily accurate. Now matter how much I practice form and hitting with my
recurves, or my Tomahawk (considerable), when I pick up the Wesley, I just
put the arrows where I want 'em without thinking about it, especially on
first shots. So, whatever the sacrifice in speed or extra draw weight, I
prefer the HH bow.
Looking for more cast, I got Craig to try a carbon Wesley, and the "Black
Bear" was born. The 73# bow shoots 9 gpp at 187 fps, with all the great
feel and accuracy of the regular Wesley. My 70# Wesley shoots a 525 gr arrow
180-185 fps (about 7.5 gpp). So, without extensive comparisons, I can say
the Black Bear has a lot more cast. Another way to see it is Craig's draw
weight plus 115 = expected speed, which I got at 7.5 gpp, now comes through
at 9 gpp. AMO speed would be a lot more since AMO speed is a lighter arrow
and a 30" draw (a compound standard).
If a 55# Black bear would do 9 gpp at 187 fps - 500 gr arrow - that would be
a really nice longbow for a draw weight most archers would like. Pretty
good.
Best Regards,
Wayne<<<

An additional note from Wayne:

Went on a South Texas hunt last weekend with my new Howard Hill "Black Bear" carbon-backed Wesley Special. Too early for much deer action, and I never saw a shootable whitetail.
But, this juvinile cottontail fell to my Black Bear at 20 yards with a laminated birch arrow and 140 gr. steel blunt. That's a trophy to me, and confirmed my satisfaction with the handy accuray of this new carbon Wesley Special.
