Howard Hill Bows List Classified Ad Page

This page is established to provide a place for list members to show items they have for sale or trade. Items must be traditional archery related. This web site is not "member access" in terms of posting changes, so listings must be sent to the web manager at:

rwightman@mindspring.com

LIstings should include the basic information on the bow, i.e. bow length, weight at specified draw, any history as you know it, constructions details (riser and lam woods). Good photos are an obvious asset. Be sure to include solid contact info... your personal email address or phone number. Include several good photos. Pictures of the bow drawn are not as important as pictures of the riser and the markings on it, as these can reveal the age of the bow, its model and serial number and, in the case of older Hills, who built it. Send your information and pictures to me at the address above. I use jpeg format. I'll reprocess the pictures if necessary, but obviiously, if you can process them yourself, that saves me work. Maximum width is 500 pixels and maximumheight is 500 pixels.

When I post an ad, I will enter the date at the bottom. If your item sells, please notify me so I can take the ad down. Ads will be left up for two months. Items can be re-listed, but if they didn't sell the first time around, consider changing the price.

Note: The Web Master is merely a conduit for these ads and makes no guarantees as to accuracy of descriptions, etc. Any problems between buyers and sellers must be resolved between them.

Quiver from Bobby Ratliff

This is my personal quiver. The base leather is my usual wax/oiled leather, and the trim leather is natural colored Bison. It also has hand cut lace, that I cut from the same Bison. It has a matching wool strap woven by me also, to match the quiver. It has bison fur in the top to keep the arrows silent instead of the fleece cinch. As seen in the video and pics, I added a couple extra D-rings to the top piece just for kicks. It has a Eastern red cedar spine under clear glass.
I've only used this quiver maybe a couple times in the yard for practice. It's a beautiful quiver.
It's 24 inches deep. My arrows are 30 inches long to the back of my point. You could use 29 inch long arrows to the back of point with broadheads but 30 is the shortest without getting the feathers down inside the top ring. You could use up to 33 inch arrows to back of point with no problem.
Price is $225 shipped to USA.

American Flatbows by Dick Wightman

Those who follow my bowyering adventures on the HHL email list know that I do not consider myself a professional bowyer. I don’t take orders or build bows to someone else’s specifications, nor do I build specifically to sell. I’m just a guy who likes to build stuff and is trying to learn as much as he can about bow making. Each bow I make has some particular thing about it that I wanted to try to learn about.

I have spent a lot of time studying the work of the early Hill Archery bowyers as well as Dan Quillian and Louis Armbruster. I aim at a good, simple, usable bow that is as close to the tradition of the American Flatbow as it was in the early days of fiberglass bows, about 40 to 60 years ago, as I can achieve. While these are simple bows, there seem to be endless subtleties and I keep building and learning. They continue to accumulate. When you reach the point of having three bows on one peg, things are getting out of hand!

Glass, glue, wood and shop supplies cost money, and periodically I have to sell a bow or I wouldn’t be able to continue making them and learning. I sell my bows as used, in that I have shot, tested and played a bit with every one, else how would I learn? Occasionally one may be “well used”, i.e. it was my “go to” bow for a summer 3D season but is no longer in use because I’ve moved on and am now shooting the bow I most recently made.

I'm currently asking $200 for a finished bow, plus $25 for shipping. It costs an average of between $125 and $150 for make one of my bows. Figuring on the standard 35 plus hours to build a bow, I worked out that on average, I make a staggering $1.43 per hour! 8^) Obviously, I'm basically parting with one to get the money to build the next one. My arrangement has been that I ship the bow on payment. If you don't like it, you can ship it back within a week, obviously in same condition, and I'll refund the $200 purchase price.

I currently have three bows available. You can check the Gallery for pix and descriptions. They are:

Foxy Lady

67” 48@28

Osage Can You See

68” 37@28

Stevens Pass

64" 30@28

You can see narratives and full displays - unstrung, strung and full draw - of these bows in my Gallery at:
