Someone asked for pix of making a yarn silencer. This is about as quick and easy as it gets. Focus may be a problem... I haven't had my coffee yet...
take some yarn and wrap a few rings around your fingers. Wool is preferred... more traditional :^)
|
Slip the rings off your fingers and cut the yarn circle at top and bottom. Trim the ends so that both batches are even. Count the strings to be sure you have the same number in each group. Sometime you wind unevenly and one side can have an odd numbered end.
|
Choose two spots on the string, equidistant from the ends, and open the string windings as shown.
|
Slip a group of yarn ends into each opening. Now you have a choice. You can sit there and "unspin" each yarn strand and fuzzy it up by hand, or you can just go shooting. Just shooting will gradually frizz the yarn up. |
I kind of compromised, in the interest of getting a fast set of photos. I frizzed a bit and will then take it shooting. It'll end up a nice fuzzy lump, which you can trim into a nice ball if you want.

Here is the top one after 30 shots... |
and the bottom one after 30 shots. As you can see, they unravel themselves pretty quickly. |
Here they are on the bow.

A comment. This was a little 27# Hill Bear Cub I use when my shoulder has gone out, so it had a two strand string. On heavier bows with multi-strand strings, you can put some of the strands through each of the openings that occur when you open the string. That will give you more of a round ball effect.
If you know a spinner or weaver, or have a weaving shop in your area, you can probably get a couple of tufts of raw, unspun yarn, which is a little easier.
